Loki working his new flock for the 2nd time today x

Keeping those Hebrideans under control....JUST!

Loki did sooo well today!

It was his 2nd go with his new sheep.....

The 5 Hebrideans will sprint out of the County if your dog does the wrong thing, they were bought by their owner as a 'challenge' for his BC's.

So initially I was quite strict will Loki, since on his 1st go he was much too enthusiatic!

Today his previous understanding of 'circling wide' stood him in good stead x

'Mum' took hold of a length of plastic hollow tubing rather than a stock stick, ... nooo running 'beserka syle' @ the sheep Loki....shows how far he has come since the days of 'OMG it's a stick, the world will end'!

This was enough to distract him from a too direct approach, he kept wide, & within minutes the Hebrideans & their buddies were deciding that the handler was a better option that the dog, so Loki was fetching them to me!

Not bad for a little guy who cannot out sprint the Hebs in a 4 Acre field !

Megan is enjoying her new Training Sheep x

Megan had a good session today with our new Training Sheep!

She has suffered in the past from advice from trainers to push her 'out' & 'stop' her too much, all of which has made her feel - 'Ok so you dont want me to herd then!' & switch off over the last year or so.

In addition she has come across some challenging sheep who have tried to stamp & butt her, Megan does NOT do confrontation, so whereas Loki has 'blagged' his way through such situations, & Tilly frankly shows nooo fear, Megan would rather back off.

None the less, Meggie has a lovely instinct to develop & is actually more useful in certain situations, where a steady approach is needed, than Loki or Tilly.

After a Training Session in Norfolk in June 2013 with Sarah Jenkins, we realised the way forward with Megan was simply to do nothing, for me to ignore her & just follow sheep around in the field.....

With the 'pressure' taken off our 'people pleasing' Megan, she has started to listen to that small but increasingly insistent voice in her head that says 'Hey! I remember this....bossing sheep around can be FUN after all!!'

It's amazingly difficult as a 'Handler' to do absolutely nothing! But it is working rather well!

In May 2013 Loki, Megan & Tilly went Mountaineering : we hope you enjoy their Video!

Back in May 2013, Loki, Megan & Tilly had a 2 week Mountaineering & Wild Camping holiday, in the very far North West of the Scottish Highlands.

This is Loki on the left, Tilly on the right, on the ascent of Ben Stack, 2365ft.

We hope you enjoy this short Video, firstly of Loki descending Cranstackie 2625ft, with panoramic views to Beinn Spionnaidh 2536ft, in the Col between both peaks is a small lochan for cooling down & drinking from.

Finally a rather cute clip of Tilly summoning up the courage to boulder hop across a fast flowing river on the descent from Foinaven 2999ft.

At Last : dog broke sheep in a 4 acre field!!

Happy Days!

After months of 'making do' with sheep who are totally not dog broke, in a field of waist high nettles, electric fencing, debris in the field for sheep to impale them selves on, pigs to distract the dogs, guinea fowl visitors........

We are VERY grateful of course that the owners have allowed us to use their lambs, BUT I am just sooooo glad that @ last we have access to some dog broke Herdwicks, Cheviots & some rather flighty Hebrideans.

10 minutes from where I work, 35 mins drive from home, in a flat grass 4 acre field surrounded by good fencing! 3 times a week...

We can hopefully now get in some proper training. The sheep are no soft touch either, do the wrong thing & they are OFF!

This is Megan today, doing some very nice work & starting to re develop her enthusiasm for work! I really think I can get her confidence back up with these sheep.

Loki & Tilly were far too 'enthusiastic' initially, but they & the sheep will get used to each other eventually!

How lucky are we!!!

The summer sun in the UK is a bit too hot for Herding @ the moment!

Loki is finding that the summer sun is a little too much to work sheep in.....

Although I always offer him water in a bowl when he is working, it seems that he much prefers to drink out of a Cow Trough.....

Well Vallhunds ARE Cattle Dogs after all...

As always, (if only in Herding Matters it has to be said)  his half sister Tilly follows his example xx

Water out of a Cow Trough is THAT much tastier !!
